Homelessness

As I sit here in the heated comfort of my little RV, drinking my cup of hot coffee at the computer screen.  I look out  my back window.  There is a man I see out this window.  He lives there in the brush under a Yucca Tree in this vacant lot next to the RV Park.  It's close to a public transportation bus stop which he uses every day to go somewhere.  Still, almost every night he spends it under the Yucca Tree in this lot.  He's got a shopping cart which he loving packs and unpacks every day with his possessions.  I sit here and think just how fortunate I am as compared to this gentleman.  Then as the old saying goes, "for the grace of God"  comes to my mind.
How many people are living like this I wonder at times.  I heard a commercial on TV saying there was 50,000 people living on the streets of Los Angeles.  The talking head on the TV tells me that more people are slipping into poverty than any other time in the last half century.  Then on the presidential debate, I hear a participant state we need to roll back the war on poverty in this country that was started back in the sixties by a democratic president.
I'm not poor, neither am I rich, I live on the edge and I'm sure there is many more just like me in this country.  I don't go hungry, nor am I cold at night.  Nonetheless, when I can observe it every where I've been across this country so far, I start to question the state of our nation.  I know friends and acquaintances who are struggling every day just to put a roof over their heads and food on the table.    Our so called leaders are out of touch, they really should come down from those ivory towers of government and walk the streets of our country.
Maybe I'm too soft, and maybe we should just tell everyone to buck it up, tighten your belt and find a job.  Pull your self up out of poverty, why this country is full of opportunity right?

Camp Robbers

Who's the Real Camp Robbers
Old Jay stopped by for a bite and we were discussing the politicians in Juneau.  He asked, me do you think those crooks down there deserve the raise they just let pass into law being they are so busy stealing the public blind.   I had to agree, they are the biggest Camp Robbers in the woods.

Blood Pressure Rise

Political Caused Medical Problems

I was watching, what was called a televised Republican Caucus on Gavel to Gavel yesterday.  There was a discussion of the Pay Raise the Legislators were getting this year, which of course was recommended by a committee they set up last year to do such a thing.   The resulting discussion made my head explode.  We should make them pay back every damn dime they have gotten so far.  And kick them all out the very next election.  Greed is rampant, said Chance when he stopped by for a bite to eat.  He was watching me as my head exploded from the BS I was hearing from these politicians crying they can't afford to be in Juneau without a raise.   The very next discussion was that they don't have enough time to do the work they are suppose to be doing so a special session will be needed.

State Capitalism

Contradiction of Terms

I don't understand, said the old squirrel.  How did we get into this state of affairs whereby the government is bailing out Banks, and Big Business, and the rich suits who ran it all into the ground continue to be in charge.  Unfettered capitalism with the keys to the public treasury isn't what our founding fathers had in mind I don't think.

Amazement

Good Morning Alaska

We were having coffee this morning and cruising the net.  Not much was being talked about because we were both fixated on the local election results we were seeing.  After a bit I noticed the old squirrel was acting like a real nervous squirrel, whipping his tail back and forth.  He looked at me and exclaimed "Can you believe these results"  I replied, "it's certainly not the results I expected"

Alaskan Politics

I'm voting for

I saw a television political ad this morning said the old squirrel as we were having coffee.  It was Lisa Murkowski, for Senator Stevens.  He looked at me and then said   "Vote"

I'm not a Crook

I have not been convicted of anything

What said the old Squirrel?  Oh, it is just something I remember from my past I replied.  A long time ago, another solid old Republican said that.  "I'm not a Crook"  But I do understand, you have to make statements such as that during the heat of a trial and campaign.

Political Disconnect

Reality Check

This old squirrel was going through the email that we got this morning over a cup of coffee and sunflower seeds.  "There really seems to be a major reality disconnect between the Party and the convictions of the old guard here in the Great Land."   I really have to agree, I said  after reading the Party emails I just got.  I think some of the faithful I told the old squirrel are willing to put up with the delusion of being moral, as long as they stay in power.

Up Coming Election

Wondering Out Loud

What do you think, asked the old squirrel.  Do you think, Senator Stevens will win the election if he doesn't step down after this conviction?  I don't know I replied, but I do know this.  The corruption was and is still ingrained in our Great Land.  Even our local Fairbanks Mayor has gone over to the Dark side with a political TV ad backing Senator Stevens.    Didn't a past Mayor and his wife get convicted of stealing money from a Senator Stevens developed grant for them asked the old squirrel.  I had to shake my head yes.  The old squirrel then looked at me and said, looks like your right about the corruption.

Politics in the Oil Patch of Alaska

Powell jumps the Republican Ship

Well, this sure threw the Republicans for a loop, I'm betting says this squirrel.  Were you as shocked as I was he asked me.  I said I was but then it's a very special time we are living in.

Why the Secrecy

sensitive Palin ethics report kept secret

Sam Magpie stopped by the feeder and was telling the old squirrel he saw that in the Daily News Miner  He couldn't understand why.  If she is innocent as all claim, and it's all a political ploy out to get Governor Palin.  Then why all the secrecy.   The old squirrel is just as mystified by it all.

The US Firesign Theater

Are we all Bozos on this bus

Well, after listening to the news that the economy, and the market are all taking a beating.  Then I hear said the old squirrel, a lot of people are worried and the Red Cross said the donations are down. So the poor suffer even more.  Then he says I hear the  Suits who took over the failed AIG after they got the bail out loan took a vacation retreat for big bucks.  You humans are nuttier than a squirrel turd.

Crisis of Confidence

Lack of Trust

This old squirrel and I were discussing the situation concerning our politicians and the economy.  Do you trust them to do the right thing he asked.  After listening to the suits who ran the banking systems into the ground while themselves made millions.  Then after reading the transcripts of the trial of our illustrious Senator who considered himself above the law.  He said we have all been deceived and trusting them again is foolish he thinks.  The election is right around the corner and he asked me, what do you think the people in this country are going to do.  Keep the old guard in place or sweep them out with the rest of the trash.

Sarah Palin Acceptance Speech

I think it was great

I think she did just fine, said this old squirrel.  Heck I'll vote for her.

Voles

I'm all Ears

This old vole was telling the squirrel this afternoon, that he was all ears and couldn't wait to hear Sarah Palins acceptance speech.  The old squirrel said even his aunti had called all the way from the Great State of Texas to ask about his thoughts on her.
