Here is todays capture...I was trying like heck to capture one of the babies at the feeder yesterday, but the little dude saw me and took off right away. I was way to close for him and he's not use to that.

Sorry about posting a blog with no pictures. What good is that :-) So, there is todays little squirrel buddy.

The Ducks are back

I walked out into the kitchen this evening, and noticed the ducks have returned. I couldn't get a picture of them, but I will as soon as possible. The drake was a beautiful green head, and the hen is pretty as can be. They were out there eating sunflower seeds, I'll put out grain first thing in the morning for them. I think it's amazing that every year they come back to my yard for something to eat.

Back in the Ranks of the Employed

I'll be teaching a Basic Computer course at the Adult Learning Center. So, that's going to be a change and they are going to pay me for it. That's a real change, most of the work I've been doing in the last few years for other organizations was for free.

Here is todays beauty, isn't she a little cutie. This little mother is one of the first ones at the feeder every morning and one of the last every night.

Snow Shoe Hare

He's being a regular visitor here at the Ranch and his coat is changing color so quick. Now that the snow is mostly all gone, he stands out like a sore thumb in the woods. So, he had better hurry up to escape notice from the next door neighbors dog, that runs wild and is constantly after the wildlife.

I've never seen the hares drink from the water bowls in the yard until today. I caught this one on cam.

Spring's Sprung

There is no doubt about it. Spring finally arrived. Last night the temperature didn't fall below freezing. I could hear dripping water off of the roof all night from the melting snow. I'm sure all the squirrels are happy.

Spring's Sprung

Just read that Saturdays 41 degree temp, was the first time since Dec 2 last year that it was above freezing. All the squirrels here on the Permafrost Ranch agree, it's about time.

Early Morning Breakfast

Caught the little female at the feeder early this morning with her head in the bowl.

Northern Flying Squirrels

The flyers have been constant at the feeders in the early morning hours. This little one bounced back and forth off the feeder this morning rather quickly. I was awake at around 3 AM and watched it do this for a few minutes. I walked out on the back porch and sure enough heard an owl hoot. Now I know why this little squirrel was so nervous.

A buddy who lives in Kansas sent me this picture of Red Bud Trees in bloom. I sure miss them, wish they were able to grow here.

Cold, cold, cold

Woke up this morning to -20 degrees F. I swear I don't believe we are going to have spring this year. I was just reading in the Daily News Minus "The period from Feb. 12 to March 20 was the coldest on record, according to Aycock. The average temperature was minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit, about 17 degrees colder than normal." It was in an article titled "Underground frost stopping up septic and water lines in Fairbanks" This I do know, mine is still frozen. Let me tell you what a pain that is. Along with the extreme cold temperatures the snow fall this year is way down "Snow usually acts as ground insulation but this winter only a thin blanket of 26 inches had fallen as of Tuesday, the fourth-lowest total on record to date, according to meteorologist Don Aycock at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. Normally there is more than 5 feet of snow on the ground at this time of year, he said." Global warming where are you is what I'm saying. Someone please notify Al Gore...

Thinking of spring and it's snowing

Sigh, spring is so far away here in the Great Land...

Little Female Squirrel

You can tell from this little girls belly she's got a nest with babies somewhere close. She comes late in the evening to eat at the feeder, she hits the syrup and peanut butter cup first...then starts on other goodies. I would love to see her little pinkies if I knew where her nest was. Even though I woud not want to bother them at this stage I still would love to peek.

Squirrel Eye Candy

I awoke this morning to the temps being well above zero at 12 degrees F. Just a hint that spring may be on the way even though we are expecting snow showers. Nonetheless, I'll post this little eye candy picture of my little squirrel buddy.

Spring just might be on it's way

Today, the sun was shinning and it got up into the low 20's...I was out on the front porch and just sucking up that wonderful heat and sunshine. This last month has been one of the coldest on record according to the tv local weatherman. It's an amazing thing to think that 20 degrees is wonderfully warm but living in North Pole, Alaska and through one our winters sure makes you appreciate that warmth.

Hopefully, our cold spell is broken and we will get some more spring time weather...

Red Poles at the Feeder

Such pretty little birds at the feeders, Common little Red Poles. Today was a sad day, this morning upon awakening, and letting out the dogs. I notice a little body laying in the snow bank out beside the feeder. It was one of my little Alaskan Northern Flying Squirrels. Something, most likely an owl had gotten him, he was headless and half eaten. The dogs must have spooked the predator away. The squirrels come to my feeder to eat, not to be eaten. I know it's part of nature but nonetheless, it still not a good thing to see.

Cold snap

Here it is suppose to be spring, and we are having below normal cold weather. I'm wondering where is all this global warming. I'm just kidding of course but winter isn't wanting to leave our part of the world. It's hanging on by it's icy nails. We have had little snow to insulate the ground that my septic line has frozen, I'm waiting for the steam truck to arrive today, and steam out the line. I've know of some folks who are having similar problems and even some have had their wells freeze. We still have water but can't use the drains...

Living in the far frozen north has it's advantages. When your septic lines are frozen, the advantages are hard to find. Specially at the cost of 110 dollars an hour for a steam truck and operator to come thaw them out.

Cold, cold, cold

There comes a time every winter when the cold weather really gets to me, and I wonder why and the hell I live where I do. Well, it's that time. The Squirrel Cam Thermometer says it's -39 F or -39 C, the only time the two ever meet. That meeting doesn't do anything for my mood either. It's cold enough to spit and hear it crack before it hits the ground. A friend of mine who lives in North Carolina, sent me a few pictures in an email of the flowers starting to bloom and grow in his yard. My spring is so far off for anything green to grow I can't even imagine it. The only thing growing here is ice and the permafrost. Sigh
