The little Red Poles come in Bunches when they come to the feeders. You can see dozens at once in the spring and winter when they are in the area of the Permafrost Ranch here in North Pole. The Hairy Woodpeckers are very neat birds, and I love to hear their calls when they are in the yard.

ReplyDeleteI love the little red dot on top of the Red Pole's head. I also very much enjoy woodpeckers. This is one I had never heard of -- why is it called Hairy? The picture didn't make it obvious.
ReplyDeleteWe have Downey and Hairy woodpeckers at our feeders in New Jersey. They are almost identical except the Hairy is bigger. There are also some longish feathers around the beak that may have given them that moniker. Otherwise your guess is as good as mine!

ReplyDeleteI have both Hairy and Downey woodpeckers, along with the Northern Flicker. The chickadees are my favorite though.
