I live in Irving, Texas. Today is December 29, 2009. As I let my dogs out just after dawn this morning, it was extremely noisy and my front yard trees where alive with furious action. I watched a couple of squirrels chasing each other in a very acrobatic display of daring tree to tree jumping. After a few minutes I grew bored. I took the dogs back in. All morning long, my dogs were very attentive to all windows and were whining to get out. Around noon, I noticed my backyard tree limbs moving. I went outside again. I heard a great deal of squeaky thumping noises. All of a sudden about 10 squirrels started a fantastic chase that envolved tree to tree, tree to fence and tree to roof jumping that envolved both my neighbors back yard and mine. We both have 1/2 acre lots. The squirrels were screaming and didn't notice me at all. I had several come within a few feet of me. This has been going on all morning. Their lack of awareness reminded me of the deer rut. I googled squirrel mating, confirmed my hypothesis and found this site. The squirrel mating chase was very interesting to watch. I have lived here for 10 years and I have never seen anything like this before.
